The Colombian pop star, who turned 32 yesterday, will arrive in her hometown of Barranquilla today to launch a new school for young children built by her nonprofit organization, Pies Descalzos.

According to EFE, Shakira will be joined by Colombian president Álvaro Uribe and the mayor of Barranquilla, Alex Char, to kick off the launch of the school, which is opening its doors to 1,500 local students.

La Playa, the area surrounding the Pies Descalzos school, has a population of over 21,000, of which half are children and the majority are displaced by civil conflict in Colombia.

We love the fact that even when Shaki is working hard at maintaining her international star status—whether it's by rocking out at President Obama's inauguration or recording her next album—she always finds the time to give back. If only all celebs would follow her lead!
